MakingChange Provides Free Income Tax Preparation

Making Change, Inc. partners with the Internal Revenue Service under the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) to offer free income tax preparation services for low-to-moderate income families, making $57,000 or less, who need assistance preparing their tax returns. The MultiService Center has been a site for this partnership since 2013 and has helped over 5,000 individuals and families with the service at the MultiService Center in Laurel, MD.

Making Change will offer tax assistance to Howard County residents by trained volunteers in a safe and contactless manner utilizing the MultiService Center. The new process is designed for the safety of clients, volunteers, and staff, while ensuring security of client documents. Don’t forget to wear your mask! See more details below.

The Laurel MultiServiceCenter VITA site has reached capacity and is no longer accepting new appointments. We are now referring clients to alternate locations which are listed below. When you come to the FREE tax preparation session, bring the following:

  • Social Security card(s) and photo ID(s)
  • W-2 form(s) and/or 1099(s)
  • Proof of health insurance 1095(s)
  • Correspondence from the IRS, if applicable
  • A copy of last year’s tax return
  • Bank info for direct deposit

Safe and Contactless Procedure

Step 1:

  • Drive to the MultiService Center and knock on the door.
  • A volunteer will greet you and take your documents to scan.
Step 2:
  • A volunteer will give you a consent form to sign.
  • Sign and return the form to the volunteer.
Step 3:
  • After scanning your documents, a volunteer will return your documents to you.
Step 4:
  • A Volunteer Tax Preparer will contact you directly to schedule an appointment to prepare your taxes.
